Short answer: 214 GB and 9 days are what Rockstar gives you: GTA 6's pre-load file is about 214 GB on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, pre-loading opens November 10, and the game unlocks November 19, 2026. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar Games has finally put a number on the download: about 214 GB on both consoles. That is the problem this guide solves. 214 GB is roughly a third of a base PS5's usable storage and more than half of a 512 GB Xbox Series S, so most players need to clear space before the pre-load opens on November 10. Below are the exact start times for each console, the storage math, and the fix ladder for a pre-load that will not start.
How big is the GTA 6 file size?
The GTA 6 file size is about 214 GB on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games says so directly in its Newswire post: download sizes for Grand Theft Auto VI are approximately 214 GB for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar also warns that an additional patch may also be required at launch, so 214 GB is the floor, not the ceiling — clear more than 214 GB if you can.
What 214 GB means on each console, roughly: on an original 825 GB PS5 it takes up about a third of the usable storage; on a 1 TB PS5 or Xbox Series X it fills about a quarter of the drive; on a 512 GB Xbox Series S it needs more than half of the space you can actually use. Series S owners have the tightest squeeze, so start clearing space now rather than on November 10. A day-one patch can add to the total, so leaving a buffer of a few dozen gigabytes above 214 GB is the safer move.
One thing the size does not mean: 214 GB is the pre-load file, and Rockstar has not published separate final install sizes for PS5 and Xbox, so the final installed game may differ slightly from the pre-load download once updates land.
When does the GTA 6 pre-load start?
Digital pre-loading for GTA 6 starts on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 — nine days before launch. The two consoles open at different times:
- PlayStation 5: Tuesday, November 10 at 12:00am ET (9:00pm PT on Monday, November 9).
- Xbox Series X|S: Tuesday, November 10 at 12:00am UTC (7:00pm ET / 4:00pm PT on Monday, November 9).
Rockstar moved the digital pre-load up from November 12 to November 10, so any page that still says November 12 has not caught up. The game itself launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, and unlocks at midnight local time, per the PlayStation Store listing.
One honest note: Rockstar's support FAQ still describes the PS5 window as midnight local time, while the Newswire post, updated November 5, lists 12:00am ET. If your PS5 download has not started by your local midnight, check again at 12:00am ET.
Pre-loading only downloads the files — it does not let you play early. The game stays locked until launch day. And pre-loading is only for players who pre-ordered: digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 10, while boxed copies follow the code-in-box schedule below.
How to free up 214 GB on PS5 and Xbox
Check your storage first, then clear space before November 10 so the download can start the moment pre-loading opens.
On PS5: open Settings, then Storage, and check how much space is available on Console Storage and any M.2 SSD you have installed. Go to Settings, then Storage, then Console Storage, then Games and Apps, and delete games you have finished. If you want to keep a game for later, move it to USB extended storage — you can store PS5 games on a USB drive, but you cannot play PS5 games directly from a normal external USB drive. An M.2 SSD gives you more playable space.
On Xbox Series X|S: press the Xbox button, open Profile and system, then Settings, then System, then Storage devices, and check the free space on your internal SSD or expansion card. Uninstall games you are done with. On a 512 GB Series S, 214 GB is more than half the drive, so be ruthless — and remember that Series X|S games need the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card to play, not a plain USB drive.
Whatever console you own, leave a buffer above 214 GB. Rockstar says an additional patch may also be required at launch, and nobody wants a patch to fail for lack of space on launch night.
How to pre-load GTA 6 on PS5
Pre-loading is open only to players who pre-ordered the game. On PS5, do this before November 10:
- Pre-order a digital copy of GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from a boxed copy.
- Turn on Auto-Download under Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings, then System, then Power Saving, then Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Leave your PS5 switched on or in Rest Mode with internet access, and clear at least 214 GB of free space first.
- To start it manually, open your Game Library, find Grand Theft Auto VI, and select Download. You can also send the download to your console from the PlayStation App on your phone.
If you bought a boxed copy, it has a yellow Code in Box label and no disc inside — only a download code. Redeem the code on the PlayStation Store and pre-load in the same window as digital pre-orders. Physical copies are expected at retailers from November 12.
How to pre-load GTA 6 on Xbox
On Xbox Series X|S, do this before the pre-load opens:
- Pre-order a digital copy of GTA 6 on the Microsoft Store, or redeem the code from a boxed copy at xbox.com/redeem using the same Microsoft account you play on.
- Turn on Keep my games and apps up to date under Settings, then System, then Updates.
- Choose Sleep under Settings, then General, then Power options, so the console can download while it is off.
- To start it manually, open My games and apps, go to Full library, and start it from your pre-ordered games.
- Clear up to 214 GB of free space before 12am GMT on November 10.

What if the GTA 6 pre-load won't start?
If November 10 arrives and nothing is downloading, work through this ladder in order. A game that will not download is usually a settings or storage problem, not a broken game — we fixed the same kind of launch blocker in our Modern Warfare 4 TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot fix.
- Check that you actually pre-ordered the game — pre-loading is only for pre-orders, so open your Game Library on PS5 or Full library on Xbox and confirm Grand Theft Auto VI is listed as purchased.
- Free at least 214 GB of space — open Settings then Storage, delete games you have finished, and leave a buffer above 214 GB because a day-one patch may add more.
- Turn on automatic downloads — on PS5 go to Settings then Saved Data and Game/App Settings then Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download; on Xbox go to Settings then System then Updates and turn on Keep my games and apps up to date.
- Leave the console on or in Rest Mode on PS5 or Sleep on Xbox with the internet connected — a fully powered-off console will not download.
- Start the download manually — on PS5 open your Game Library, find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Download, or use the PlayStation App; on Xbox open My games and apps, go to Full library and start it from your pre-ordered games.
- If you bought a boxed copy, redeem the code first — the box has a yellow Code in Box label and no disc, so redeem the code on your console store and then pre-load in the same window as digital pre-orders.
Two more checks before you assume something is broken. First, the clock: the pre-load opens November 10, so nothing will download before then — PS5 at 12:00am ET and Xbox at 12:00am UTC. Second, the date on the page you are reading: Rockstar moved the pre-load from November 12 to November 10, and any guide that still says November 12 is out of date. If the download still will not start after these six steps, restart the console once and check again — and do not buy a pre-load service or key from a third-party seller, because Rockstar has not announced any such thing.
PC players, a note for you: GTA 6 is not coming to PC on November 19, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version or a PC date. If your PC games are crashing after a Windows update instead, our Windows 11 update crashing games fix covers that problem.
